The Orchard Foundation

For the last 10 years the charitable community has been actively lobbying Congress for a change in tax law that would permit owners of IRAs to make tax-free lifetime transfers to charity. This summer the long-awaited Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006) passed the House and Senate by wide margins. It is potentially the most favorable charitable legislation in many years.

So what does this mean for you? And what’s so exciting about it?

The federal government now permits individuals over the age of 70½ to transfer funds from their IRA to a charitable entity (e.g., the C&MA). These tax-free rollover gifts can be given in any amount up to $100,000 before the end of 2006—and again in 2007.

It’s very easy to make the gift by directing your custodian to move a portion of your IRA to the Alliance ministry of your choice. Your gift can be part of your required minimum distribution.

For more information on how you can give a charitable donation out of your IRA—without adding these funds to your taxable income—contact your regional Orchard Foundation representative or call Joseph Padilla at The Orchard Foundation’s toll-free number: (888) 689-6300.
